        Training up a child

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

I’ m doing something this week that I’ve never done before: I’m borrowing someone else’s stuff.   That someone is Zig Ziglar, the famous motivational speaker, author and business consultant.  And the odd thing is that the writing I’ve borrowed has nothing to do with any of the topics for which he is famous.  It is instead, a great child rearing piece that really touched my heart and that I believe to be some of the best advice I’ve read in a very long time.  If you have kids or grandkids, this is a “must read” column:

Love ‘Em Down and Love ‘Em Up     Zig Ziglar

The way you start and end your child’s day is extremely important because if the day is started and ended properly, the time in between will go much better.

In almost every case, new mothers and fathers respond to their baby in a gentle and loving way.  They talk, sing and coo while they prepare the baby for bed.  They cuddle it until it goes to sleep, and then they gently lay it in its bed.

Unfortunately, over the years, things have a tendency to change.  Children are hurried off to bed between television commercials.  They are awakened by parents banging on the door, screaming, “Get up right now!  We can’t be late again today!”  Then they’re hustled to grab a quick bite to eat, rushed into the car and away they go for the day!

Suggestion:  Gently tap on your child’s door, go in and sit on the bedside, stroke your child’s head and softly kiss their forehead.  Tell them you love them and that it’s going to be a beautiful day for them and for you.  That evening, 30 minutes before bedtime, remind your child to brush their teeth, check on the homework assignment, get your child a drink of water and send him or her to the bathroom.

At bedtime, take your child by the hand, lead them back to the bed, tuck them in, then chat with them for a while.  For a child, love is spelled T – I – M – E, and your child is more likely to open up and reveal his/her heart just before they go to sleep than at any other time of the day.  Ten to fifteen minutes can make a big difference in the bonding process with your child and a positive change in your relationship by giving them that precious assurance that they are deeply loved, that you have time for them and they are more important than ten more minutes of television or texting.  Try this approach and watch your child grow up a winner!

        Epilogue

Charles Francis Adams, 19th century political figure and diplomat, kept a diary. One day he entered: "Went fishing with my son today--a day wasted." His son, Brook Adams, also kept a diary, which is still in existence. On that same day, Brook Adams made this entry: "Went fishing with my father--the most wonderful day of my life!" The father thought he was wasting his time while fishing with his son, but his son saw it as an investment of time. The only way to tell the difference between wasting and investing is to know one's ultimate purpose in life and to judge accordingly.

        Semi-interesting fact

The crocodile can run for short distances on land. It will raise itself up like a lizard and charge like a galloping horse. Moving in this way on land a crocodile can move at a surprising 15 to 30 miles an hour. In the water the crocodile can easily move at the rate of 20 miles per hour.

        Joke du Jour

A father sends his small boy to bed. Five minutes later....
        "Da-ad...."
        "What?"
"I'm thirsty. Can you bring drink of water?" "No. You had your chance. Lights out."
        Five minutes later: "Da-aaaad....."
        "WHAT?"
"I'm THIRSTY. Can I have a drink of water??"
"I told you NO!" If you ask again, I'll have to spank you!!"
        Five minutes later......"Daaaa-aaaad....."
        "WHAT!"
"When you come in to spank me, can you bring a drink of water?"

Five Surprising Ways to Use a Hair Dryer

        1. Detach a Photo From An Album. Blow warm air on the back of the page while gently pulling the picture free.
        2. Dust Tough-to-Reach Places. Set the dryer on cool to give those trick shelves and knick knacks a once-over.
        3. Dewrinkle Plastic Shower Curtains or Tablecloths. You can "iron" out the fold marks with hot air, just remember to keep it a foot away from the object to avoid any meltdowns.
        4. Perfect Frosting or Icing. Use the cool setting to harden your cake, use hot air to brighten a dull finish.
        5. Erase Crayon Marks or Wax Spills. Did the kids go crazy during craft time? Blow-dry the stain on high until the wax melts, then wipe away with a soapy sponge

        Really??  Actual News

        A  horses' what?
A German designer has created a bizarre new range of shoes - from dead animal parts. Iris Schieferstein, 45, spends months creating high heel horse hooves, stilettos from snake skins and sandals sculpted from doves. Ms Schieferstein, who designed a pair of horse hooves for Lady Gaga, sells the shoes for up to $6500. She collects the dead animals from her local butcher in Berlin, then spends a week stripping out the meat and bones from the animal's feet before the skin is sent to a tanner to be preserved. The sculptor then sets the skin - complete with fur still in place - around a shoe model before doing any needlework to add insoles and lining. She said: "I love horses and I love shoes so I thought this would be perfect. Horses have a beautiful walk and I wanted to recreate that with my footwear. "Creating the shoes is ugly work, taking the meat out is not nice, like any taxidermy. When I began working with dead animals I would pick them up from the street.  "But they are protected by the government in Germany, and so after ten years they tried to put me in prison. Now I use my butcher.  "Once the shoes are made I wear them to make sure they work, although they would not be suitable to wear around the house."

Key To Amelia Investigators think they've uncovered a key clue that will lead them to solve the mystery of what happened to legendary aviator Amelia Earhart, who disappeared on a trans-Pacific flight 75 years ago. Ric Gillespie, executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, said a new enhanced analysis of a photo taken on the Pacific atoll of Nikumaroro, three months after Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared may show the landing gear of her Lockheed Electra protruding from a reef.  "We found some really fascinating and compelling evidence," Gillespie said at a news conference in Washington. He  said the photo was taken by a British survey team in October 1937 and had been seen by Earhart researchers many times. But investigators took a new look at it in 2010 and, when their suspicions were triggered, had the photo checked by U.S. State Department experts. In a blind review, they determined the component in the picture is the landing gear of a Lockheed Electra.  "This is where the airplane went into the drink," Gillespie said.  Gillespie will depart Honolulu on a research vessel to try to find that plane in the deep waters off a flat reef on Nikumaroro. The privately funded effort will use robotic submarines to comb the area. The Discovery Channel will film the exploration for a TV presentation, Gillespie said. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell called the disappearance of Earhart "the last great unsolved mystery of the 20th century."  If the mystery is solved this summer, Earhart's aviation trailblazing will have played a part, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said.  "In no small part because of Amelia Earhart, our world is smaller," LaHood said. "This very voyage to recover her remains in some ways is doable because of Earhart herself."  "We take a special measure of pride in an expedition that is as enterprising and inspiring as the woman with which it will unite us," he said.  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton saluted Earhart's memory, too.  "Her legacy resonates today for anyone, girls and boys, who dreams about the stars," Clinton said. "She gave people hope and she inspired them to dream bigger and bolder."."

Gross or Green?  The city of Bellingham, Wash. just completed a pedestrian walkway incorporating recycled porcelain from more than 400… crushed toilets that were diverted from a local landfill.  A sidewalk made from toilets may inspire an initial ick-factor, but using recycled materials helped the city save loads of cash and natural resources on their redevelopment project.  The “potty sidewalk” was part of the six-block Trail Project in downtown Bellingham. The city even paved roads with asphalt containing 30 percent recycled materials.  While the idea of a sidewalk made of crushed commodes may sound groundbreaking enough, that’s not the only first here. The project is also one of the first to pursue Greenroads™ certification and the first ever to attain it.  The Greenroads™ program is similar to the LEED program for green buildings. In addition to the potty-paved sidewalks, 12 projects are currently pursuing Greenroads™ certification globally, ranging from new construction to reconstruction to overlay and bridge projects.

Bobbing away Gun-toting bobblehead dolls of the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln have been pulled from the Gettysburg National Military Park visitors' center bookstore.  The dolls of John Wilkes Booth were removed from shelves a day after a newspaper reporter asked about them. The paper said it had received an anonymous complaint about the dolls.  "On rare occasions, there's an item that might cause concern, and obviously the bobbleheads appeared to be doing that," Gettysburg Foundation spokeswoman Dru Anne Neil said. Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer told the Evening Sun he was glad to hear the figurines had been taken down.  "One could say wiser bobbleheads prevailed," he told the newspaper. "It's inappropriate to celebrate a criminal who took the life of a great American whose memory and words are celebrated at Gettysburg."

World's Oldest Paraglider  A 101-year-old Utah woman is officially the world's oldest paraglider, setting a new Guinness record by soaring through the skies over her hometown.  Mary Allen Hardison set the record in front of a group of spectators that included her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great-great grandchildren.  She admitted that part of the reason she took to the skies was out of competition with her 75-year-old son. "I don't want my son to do anything I can't do, so I decided to go have fun like he did," Hardison said after the record-breaking flight, which was done with the help of her instructor, Kevin Hintze.  A self-described rookie to the paragliding sport, Hardison's primary hobby is knitting garments for the less fortunate: caps for children's hospitals, crocheted bandages for leopards in India, and knit caps for premature babies, according to Guinness World Records.  Her closest experience to anything extreme was riding all the rides at Disneyland at age 90.  "My desire is for the elderly to keep on going, do things as long as you are physically able. Be positive. Friends don't like a grumpy person," Hardison told Guinness.

        Point to Ponder
There are two paths in life. One is the path of obedience and blessing. The other is the path of disobedience. And the path that we travel on is our choice. If we're travelling on the path of disobedience, we can't say, "God's withholding His blessing from me." He doesn't need to withhold it. We are not on the path of obedience and blessing. If we want to choose the path of disobedience where there's no blessing, then that's up to us. But if we choose the path of obedience, that's where the blessing is. The path of blessing may be tough at times, but it's still the path of blessing.
