Loud n' Proud
Let’s face it: it takes a substantial amount of ego to get on a microphone in front of thousands of listeners and believe that they care about what you have to say. And the line between ego and pride can be razor thin. While a healthy ego is a necessity to succeed in radio, slipping across that line and becoming filled with pride is not only counterproductive…it is downright destructive.
As it says in the Bible, “Pride goeth before the fall!” Oh, wait a minute-the Bible DOESN’T say that. The Bible actually says, “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” It’s another one of those scriptural misquotes that’s been repeated so many times through so many decades that it’s become part of the popular lexicon. In either case, whether it’s pride or a haughty spirit, its bad news. You begin to believe that you know it all: that everyone should defer to you, that you are the smartest guy in the room…any room.
G. Gordon Liddy is a great example: He once said, "I have found within myself all I need and all I ever shall need. I am a man of great faith, but my faith is in George Gordon Liddy. I have never failed me." In Liddy’s case, I think he managed to find a level beyond mere pride: I believe it’s called Megalomania. Praise God I never puffed up that big ...even before I got saved. I did however, have a serious dose of pride (or haughty spirit.) And it’s easy to draw a direct line from that pride to the fall and destruction of the life I was living. As I like to say, I thought I could do anything with no help from anyone: I thought I was Captain Marvel! Then one day I yelled, “Shazaam” and nothing happened. No lightning bolts, no anything. Trust me…that’ll let the air out of your oversized head.
How did I get so filled with pride in the first place? As I said earlier, it takes a substantial ego to get on the air and give your opinions and think that people will actually listen. Then people start calling, emailing and sending you fan mail telling you they like what you’re saying. Approval, attention, even affection! It’s pretty heady stuff. Sponsors tell you what a great job you’re doing and the ratings are good. More approval, attention and affection. Before you know it, you start believing all the hype. “By golly, I must be pretty good. No...make that very good.” Just like that, you’re being eaten up with pride.
After giving my life to Christ, I immediately came face to face with my sinful life and the huge part that pride had played in leading me down that path. So of course, I repented and vowed to never again be ruled by pride. Easier said than done. God had directed me to go back into radio broadcasting with all of its opportunities to refill my pride bag, so I knew that I’d have to be mindful of my mission: I was no longer doing radio to get approval, attention or affection…I was doing it to honor Him. Big difference. Still not easy.
David Rhodes once wrote, “Pride is the dandelion of the soul. Its root goes deep; only a little left behind sprouts again. Its seeds lodge in the tiniest encouraging cracks.” Boy, did I have a lot of cracks! I was a regular….get ready for it…..crackpot.(groan) So I worked really hard to keep my head on straight and to stay focused on defeating pride. And after several years I did it! I defeated pride!
Only to discover that I was proud of not being proud. So the fight goes on.
Epilogue
We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. A. Lincoln, Proclamation of a day of National Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer, 1863.

Joke Du Jour
This old man was feared by all his neighbors because they believe he practiced black magic and was responsible for missing cats and dogs and strange sounds at all hours. Every time he had a confrontation with his wife, screams and yelling could be heard deep into the night along with the same statement. “When I die I will dig my way up and out of the grave to come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!”
Well he died and the funeral had a closed casket. After the burial, the wife went straight to the local bar and began to party and party. The cheerfulness of her actions caused her neighbors to approach and ask:
Arn't you afraid? Worried? Concerned? This man who practiced black magic swore when he died he would dig his way up and out of the grave to come back and haunt you for the rest of your life?
The wife put down her drink and said, “Let him dig. I had him buried upside down.”

Adele Song Wakes Girl From Coma A 7-year-old girl woke up from a life-threatening coma when Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" came on the radio. Charlotte Neve suffered a rare type of brain hemorrhage in mid-April, and slipped into a coma after two operations were performed to stop the bleeding. Doctors told her
mother, Leila, that her daughter's chances didn't look good. The girl had been in a coma for a week when her mother stopped in one day and began singing to "Rolling in the Deep," which was on the radio. Charlotte smiled in response, astounding doctors. Within two days, she started speaking and even managed to get out of bed. "I couldn't believe it," Leila Neve told The Telegraph. "It was the first time she had reacted to anything since the hemorrhage. The nurses were astounded and told me to keep singing, and she smiled again...[They] said it was like I "unlocked her," and from that day she started getting better and better." Since then, Charlotte's recovery has been speedy. She's partially blind and suffers from memory loss, but is already back in school part-time and taking dance classes. "How she's still here is beyond everybody," Leila Neve said. "I was told that she was very lucky to survive."Adidas breaks'Shackles' German sports apparel maker Adidas has withdrawn its plans to sell a controversial sneaker featuring affixed rubber shackles after the company
generated significant criticism when advertising the shoe on its Facebook page. The high-top sneakers, dubbed the JS Roundhouse Mids, were expected to be released in August, according to the Adidas Originals Facebook page. "Got a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles?" a caption below a photo of the sneakers read. "I literally froze up when I saw a new design from Adidas," Dr. Boyce Watkins said in a post for "Your Black World." Though dismissing the criticism in a written statement by defending the sneaker's designer as having a "quirky" and "lighthearted" style, Adidas nonetheless said that it planned to cancel the shoe's release. "The design of the JS Roundhouse Mid is nothing more than the designers outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery," the statement said. "We apologize if people are offended by the design and we are withdrawing our plans to make them available in the marketplace." Jesse Jackson said, "The attempt to commercialize and make popular more than 200 years of human degradation is offensive, appalling and insensitive," he said in a statement. on the lookout for a new security guard when workers spotted the attentive cat roaming around the factory floor. Millie's excellent climbing abilities and loud purr made her the prime candidate for the role."We are expecting a bumper year this Christmas with orders starting to fly in from retailers putting in their requests," a spokesman said."With the appointment of Millie the security cat, our toys are now very well protected." Having put paw to paper on a contract, Millie will be paid in cat food and fish at the factory. Millie's owner added: "Millie has always had a very vigilant personality and doesn't mind long hours alone."I'm not surprised she took up a career as a security guard - the toys are lucky to have such an attentive guardian."

McDonald's cooks with blowtorch Ever wonder why your quarter pounder looks nothing like the one on the commercials? Hint: the camera-ready quarter pounder takes hours to construct with a team of Toronto-based experts armed with a syringe, a blowtorch and Photoshop, of course. In an unusual step,
a McDonald's exec in Toronto posted a YouTube video to try to explain why their burgers look so much better on TV. The video has gone viral with nearly 1.6 million hits. Hope Bagozzi, director of marketing for McDonald's Canada, orders a quarter pounder with cheese in a store and compares it to a food stylist-crafted burger. In store, Bagozzi said, the burgers take about a minute to slap together, while it takes a food stylist several hours to meticulously craft the camera-ready sandwich. The expert in the video carefully puts the pickles and onions toward the outer edge of the burger and uses a syringe to squirt the condiments on it. He also uses a blowtorch to delicately melt the cheese. The image is then Photo shopped to fix any blemishes on the bun, correct any out-of-place sesame seeds or toppings and boost the color. As for the size discrepancies between the tiny in-store burger and large expert-made sandwich, Bagozzi claims the heat trapped in the cardboard box after preparation causes the bun to shrink. A bathroom break turned embarrassing and painful for a Kentucky woman.
Monticello city officials say the woman went to use a toilet in the local Walmart when she realized she was stuck to the seat.It was later determined the seat was covered in Super Glue. The woman was stuck inside the restroom for nearly an hour. Police are now investigating the incident. "We're looking at it. Right now, I wouldn't be prepared to say which way it was -- accident or intention," the city's police chief Ralph Miniard says. Paramedics were called to help pull the woman off the seat. She was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out. This isn't the first time someone was glued to a toilet seat at a Walmart. A man got stuck to a toilet at a Maryland Walmart on March 31, the result of an April Fool's Day prank. Putting Super Glue on a toilet is considered a crime, and the perpetrator could face second-degree assault charges, Lt. Matthew Donnelly of the Elkton police department said.
