        In A Nutshell

Over the years of doing a daily radio show, I’ve become somewhat known for, among other things, having a different “Thought for the Day” in every show.  I am constantly on the lookout (and listen-out) for interesting thoughts that I can use and that the audience will enjoy.  I try to find a balanced mix of humorous, serious, inspirational and spiritual quotes to use.  Many of them come from the writings of famous folks like Will Rogers, C.S. Lewis, Churchill, and Edison.  Others come from show business, comedy, political and diplomatic figures.  Some come from famous folks…some from unknowns.  Some, I make up myself.

One thing they all have in common: they each make a point.  Each is intended to deliver a message.  Whether the message is contained in a humorous wrapping (“A closed mouth gathers no feet”) or in a serious one (“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”  Albert Schweitzer) the goal is the same: deliver a message. Whether listeners retain anything else from my show, odds are they’ll remember a “Thought for the Day.”  It’s a mini-sermon, if you will; “Wisdom in a Nutshell.”

I spend a good bit of time in the selection process.  Over the years, I have shared hundreds upon hundreds of these quotes with my listeners and they seem to really like them.  In fact, when I meet listeners in person I am often asked to name a favorite. The truth is I like all of them but several do come to mind when we talk about my favorites.  Below are some of them:

        • “The problem with the rat race is that, even when you win, you’re still a rat.”

        • “When anyone tells you that it’s not the money, it’s the principle… bet on it: it’s the money.”

        • "No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child." Abraham Lincoln.

        • “Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.”

        • “A camel is a horse built by committee.”

        • "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." Thomas Edison

        • “Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment.” Will Rogers

        • If you’re not as close to God as you used to be, ask yourself who moved.

        • God gave us twice as many ears as mouths for a reason.

Each of these little nuggets contains a truth…”Wisdom in a Nutshell.”  Wiser men than me have said that brevity is the soul of wit.  Hopefully, it’s also the soul of remembrance.  Next week; my all-time favorite “Thought for the Day.”

        Epilogue

Former president Calvin Coolidge was known as a man of few words. Once, at a White House dinner, a woman approached Coolidge and said, "Mr. President, I have a bet with a friend that I can get you to say at least three words." Coolidge looked at her and said, "You lose."

        Joke Du Jour

A drunk walked into a bar and, after staring for some time at the only woman seated at the bar, walked over to her and kissed her. She jumped up and slapped him silly. He immediately apologized and explained, "I'm sorry. I thought you were my wife. You look exactly like her."

"Why you worthless, insufferable, wretched, no good drunk!" she screamed.

"Funny," he muttered, "you even sound exactly like her."

        Really??  Actual News

        He’s got the blues
Toby, a blue lobster caught in waters off the coast, is said to be a 1-in-2-million exception to the rust-colored norm.  He has been staying in his own container in Martin's Fish Co.'s lobster tank since the crew of the Pot Luck fishing boat brought him in with  a catch.  "We like to name all our lobsters," manager Ginger Nappi said while people gathered around the tank, checking out Toby.  Nappi picked up Toby and another lobster to display that the azure-colored specimen's underside is also paler than most of his counterparts.  "We've been living here a long time, and we've never seen anything like that," Pat Cooke said.  Captain Guorley said he decided to donate Toby to the National Aquarium's Washington location.  Until staffers come to pick him up, Toby will stay in the tank at Martin's.  "I figured that would be the best thing to (do) with it," he said. "What am I gonna get — seven bucks for the thing, a pound-and-a-half lobster?  I'd rather see them take it and, hopefully, they can raise it."  Toby is blue because of a genetic variation that shows up in about one of every 2 million born that causes the lobster to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein that gives it that pigmentation, according to the University of Maine Lobster Institute.

Wedding dress on a roll  A US woman has won a toilet paper wedding dress contest for the second year running with a stunning outfit made from 10 jumbo rolls.  Susan Brennan, from Orchard Lake, Michigan, scooped the equivalent of nearly $1700 in prize money.  She said it took her just a week to make the dress for the competition, run by the Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com website."I wanted something really original, something young brides would want to wear," the 26-year-old designer said."It has the high-low hems, so your shoes can show, really fun back. So really fun with the cutouts very modern and it's my little bohemian cupcake."

What a croc It took about 100 people to pull the crocodile to a clearing and
it was big enough to swallow three men all at once,' says the local mayor. It weighs one ton and is believed responsible for eating at least one fisherman, but this monster crocodile has finally been caught by 100 very cautious men.  Measuring 21ft from snout to tail, the massive creature is the largest crocodile captured alive in recent years.  The beast was caught, after a three-week hunt  in the Philippines by villagers who had lived in fear of it for more than 20 years.  However, when a village fisherman went missing and the crocodile became the chief suspect, plans were hatched to catch it.  It was placed under observation and when it was witnessed by several villagers killing a water buffalo they knew their suspicions were right.  It is expected to be the star attraction at a new eco-tourism park that is being set up in Agusan.  'It will be the biggest star of the park,' said Mr Elorde.  'The villagers, of course, are very happy that they have been able to turn this dangerous crocodile from a threat into an asset.'

Does he have to cut off an ear? Elephants never forget, and that means they never forget about their own kind, especially when they need a little help. Shanti, an elephant at the Prague Zoo, is creating and selling original works of art in a fund-raising effort to help other elephants in need.  Shanti had her first art opening this month when a Czech gallery displayed her colorful and abstract creations. The profits from Shanti's paintings went to aid an elephant zoo in Sri Lanka. Specifically, the money from the masterpieces helped purchase an ultrasound device. The Prague Zoo hopes this is the first of many opportunities for Shanti's creative work to go to good use. The zoo is known for its unusual but amusing fund-raising tactics. Last year, the zoo sold visitors elephant dung that could be used as fertilizer

Sinner Webb Simpson, who won today's U.S. Open golf tournament, has a Twitter bio that describes him as a "*sinner* loved by a Savior."  Simpson, who trailed by four entering the final day, beat Michael Thompson and Graeme McDowell by one stroke. He studied religion at Wake Forest University and hosts a Youth for Christ Challenge golf tournament.  "It was a cool day. I had a peace all day," Simpson told reporters. “I probably prayed more on the last three holes than I’ve ever done in my life, and that kept me calm and got me home in 2 under.  “I’d be stupid not to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, because it was tough out there and I was nervous, and I felt his presence all day,” he told CBN.  In an interview with Beliefnet's Chad Bonham, Simpson described how faith directly plays into golf ethics.  “Our deposit of the Holy Spirit living inside of us, more than anything, has allowed me to make those tough decisions. It’s happened probably 10 times in my life where I had to make certain calls and call penalty shots on myself. For me, it’s not as much the nature of the game but the fact that the Holy Spirit is prompting me to call a penalty on myself. Within our own nature, we don’t want to call a penalty on ourselves. We want to see how much we can get away with. That’s been a part of every tough decision I’ve made in golf.”  On the course, Web has TITUS 3:3-7 stitched on his caps.

        Point to Ponder

In Elmer Bendiner's book, “The Fall of Fortresses,” he describes one bombing run over the German city of Kassel: Our B-17 was barraged by flak from Nazi antiaircraft guns. That was not unusual, but on this particular occasion our gas tanks were hit. Later, as I reflected on the miracle of a twenty-millimeter shell piercing the fuel tank without touching off an explosion. On the morning following the raid, our crew chief said that not just one shell but eleven had been found in the gas tanks--eleven unexploded shells.  Only one would have blown us out of the sky. It was as if the sea had been parted for us. Even after thirty-five years, so awesome an event leaves me shaken. The shells had been sent to the armorers to be defused.  Apparently when the armorers opened each of those shells, they found no explosive charge. They were clean as a whistle and just as harmless. Empty. But not all of them.

One contained a carefully rolled piece of paper. On it was a scrawl in Czech. Eventually, they found one to translate the note. It set us marveling.  Translated, the note read: "This is all we can do for you now.” Czech slave laborers inside a munitions plant had saved us.

Remember, Christianity is more about walking than about talking
